Time out with Typography

Those of you who regularly check in with my blog will know that recently I have been focusing on the creation of typography. Interestingly I have created a font using basic Photoshop shapes, hopefully it will interest you too!

New Logo Design

Alongside graphic lovers across the globe I have embraced the amalgamation of shapes and gradients to compliment fonts. Here is the start of things to come (possibly!)

Digital Mazey - Art Direction & Photography

As promised I upload the images I created for The Songmen. The chaps had a new recruit and once again called on me to help them create some smashing new photos with a conceptual twist. As vocal perfection is at the heart of their music-making I suggested going for an ironic touch by covering their mouths with extra strong tape. Thus preventing them from using the tool they are best known for and allowing their audience to see another side of the boys. They loved the idea and from this was born a series of playful photos to accompany their biographies on their new website.

Project: The Songmen - Back for More...

Vocal group, The Songmen are back for more. With a new line up, they needed some new contemporary press photos to accomany their new tour and new website.

Buttons - simplicity is key

As a designer, much of my time is spent designing to meet the brand expectations of the consumer. So I have been looking into design components (from scratch). Here is what I have come up with.

Shortly I'll be applying these components to an overall design, but in the meantime, try an get your head around the process of button components. Here are a few I have created using curved shapes and Photoshop effects.

Try using 'screen' and 'bevel' effects to create simple buttons. Then using gradients, you can add shine an reflection to your buttons.

Taking typography and mixing it up

After my dabble I integrated the typography into a photography design I have been working on. The image is intended for a logo to help brand a photography website and blog. Here is a sneak peek to whet your appetites...

Dabbling in typography

There comes a time in every designers life when you just fancy a change. Something new perhaps? While milling around the DM studio I came across scraps of paper from way back when... low and behold, my first attempts at typography. After a wee chuckle to myself I set about giving it another go, and so beings my dabble with typography:

What's in a name?

The real reason behind the name? I'll tell you. First off I was born, ha, obvious I know. My Mum had an awful time of it really. Confused over what to name her only daughter (whom she'd suffered two long and painful boy-births for), she set about asking various family members for some ideas. Dad (aka Robert), surprisingly suggested Roberta - he's a modest fellow; Grandad suggested Constance (which needless to say did not go down well with Mum). To cut a long story short I was named Sophie, not sure why as there had been a plethora of other names in the hat before we finally arrived at this.

One name that got overlooked was 'Mazey'. A name that had survived the generations, and what I decided would succeed my 'Digital' title. Gran, alongside my Mum, are two of my greatest inspirations, so it seemed obvious my chosen name should derive from them both, being my Gran's maiden name and my Mum's middle name.

As for the digital part, well, my life and the world around me is digital and for those of you out there resisting it, well, all I can say is embrace it - it's the direction we're heading folks! Most of my unpaid day is spent searching and burrowing myself in the world of design, from design websites to the posters I see on the underground. Design, in short, is my life, and I love it, each and every wonderfully coloured pixel of it!

re.touchme DIGITAL Weddings

A personal project I have embarked on, a mock up of a website providing an online wedding photography service and portfolio. Ben and Jackie wanted Wedding photos that were both staged contemporary and documentary.

The boys at Transit Cop HQ needed a website and debut CD cover along with promotional materials designed for their UK tour.

The male a capella group required a new look for their website and promotional concert posters.

Procrastinating in Pattern Design

As Christmas is on looming nearer, I felt I ought to get myself in the swing of things and not leave things too late this year!

By designing this new pattern stamp I will be able to apply this to a recurring pattern to use for all my wrapping paper this year. (An expensive idea, but what's Christmas without a little giving?)

The inspiration behind the design came from retro Christmas cards. Instead of just keeping the colour palette muted, I decided to add a festive bold red and gold font.

While freelancing on the picture desk at Arena, I produced shoots featuring Marina and the Diamonds, the Noisettes, and Little Boots.
