LINC T-shirt Design

Digital Mazey has had the pleasure of collaborating with another UK based charity this summer. This time, LINC, who support patients and their families affected by Leukaemia, Lymphoma and other blood cancers.

LINC commissioned Digital Mazey to design a t-shirt for staff to wear as a uniform in the office and for charity members to wear and promote LINC during events.

Here's to LINC and the great work they do...

EXCLUSIVE: New Digital Mazey Design Typeface 'JeriBlue'

Here in the Digital Mazey Design office I've been kept busy honing my typography skills ready for the launch of my new Font Collection later this year.

This month I've been concentrating on a typeface inspired by my time in Jericoacoara, Brazil this year, called JeriBlue.

The name comes from a mixture of the shortened word for the location, and the hazy colour that masks the area. The font is strong, bold, and interesting like the people who live there.

Digital Mazey - Doing Her Bit For Charity

This month I've been working on a design for a charity called Sporting Swindon.

As the charity branding is in its early stages, I was flattered to be asked to design their logo. Still, having all of the below sporting aspects included was quite a challenge - but I do love a challenge...

Items included in briefing: a dartboard, a dart, a pool cue, a pool ball, a bowling ball and a bowling pin.

3 Javascript Masters: The Creator, The Humble Writer and The Show Off

Wham! Another weekend over, but wait, it's not all bad news! This week has been one of the most productive in the DMD Studio.

I have been concentrating on the 3 main components of Javascript in order to make designs more dynamic and playful...

- Variables
- Conditionals
- Loops

Although it's not the easiest language to get your head around, it is fun, so here are 3 simpler snippets of coding you can start with in order to set a firm foundation toward mastering its wondrous delights.

The Creator - Script Tags:
Javascript, much like HTML, needs tags to tell a browser what it is. The tags used to do this are script tags which look like this:

<script type="text/javascript">
     ***content goes here***
</script>

The Humble Writer - Document Write:
In order to write to the page you must use the prefix document.write. This will sit inside the scripting tags, like this (don't forget the cheeky semi-colon at the end of the statement):

<script type="text/javascript">

     document.write("hello world");
</script>

The Show Off - Alert:

Alerts prompt the browser to display a small box with a message and an action. You may have already seen these when you are exiting out of an online document without saving. You can create one very simply, using this code as a guide:

<script type="text/javascript">

     alert("hello world");
</script>

That's all for now folks. I'm be in touch with more complex levels of scripting soon.

Good luck and happy scripting!

Design Simplicity

Sometime simplicity can be key to a design's success. Sometimes it can just be plain nice. No bells, no whistles.

I created this steel cup of water using only components created from flat shapes and colour in Photoshop. Simple designs are also versatile. This cup wouldn't look out of place as a logo, icon or advert.

Don't forget you can see more of my work, and keep up to date with my design news, by signing up to  receive my newsletter here!

D is for design

As a lover of typography, I have been working on a range of type-faces for my portfolio.
Here is a quick preview of the gold type I have just completed.

What came first: the spider or the web?

To grow our empires we need to start thinking about the shift from fixed websites to the apps, iPads and multi-faceted web services of the future.

"Web services?" I hear you cry. For those of you who don't know, future technology buffs are already working on making your lives easier by moving your desktop programmes into the cloud (ahem, aka online).

So, to set the scene, you take the long laborious commute to work, and damn, you forgot to hand in that article for your 9am-or-die deadline.

What do you do?

Well, at the moment, if you haven't got that document on your laptop/phone/iPad etc, then, quite frankly, you may find the return journey home comes sooner than you expected (and I don't mean a good-will-gesture 'half-day').

"It's how we've always coped, so what's different?" You might add...

Sooner rather than later, people are going to be able to access all their programmes from the cloud (and it's already happening!). Imagine, turning on your computers and hey presto what have we got ourselves? Only an easier lifestyle full of stress-free document accessibility!

So, let's embrace this new world of technology. There's only a few years left before we can start rambling "it wasn't like that in my day..."

Video killed the radio... I think not!

Here at DMD HQ I began whiling away the wee small hours with a brief Photoshop encounter...
So, inner shadows really do have a use?

To plug or to unplug, that is the question

Simplicity tends to be the secret to good icon design (as they tend to be very small).

I have used a muted colour palette of greys and whites to create these 'plug and unplug
hard drive' icons.

An edible emulsion of fat globules made by churning milk or cream!

Butter - A snippet preview of a new website design I have been working on.

I have paid homage to the way the mixture of fonts and words can convey an air of tangibility. The rounded softness of the Cooper Black font juxtaposed with the buttery yellow colour emphasises the feel and look of butter without needing to display an image or photo.

Simplicity, nicely churned.
